DESCRIPTION
The DS1804 NV t r immer p ot ent io meter is a no nvo lat ile digita l pot entio meter t hat has 100 p os it io ns. T he
device pro vides an ideal method for lo w-cost t rimming applicat ions using a CPU o r manual control input
with minimal external circuitry. Wiper position of the DS1804 can be stored in EEPROM memory on
demand. The device’s wiper posit ion is manipulated by a three-ter mina l po rt t hat pro vide s an incr eme nt/
decre ment co unt er controlled inter face. T his port consists of the co ntro l inputs
CS
,
INC
, and U /
D
. The
DS1804 is available in three resistor grades, which include a 10k, 50k, and 100k. The device is
provided in an industrial temperature grade. Additionally, the DS1804 will operate from 3V or 5V
supplies and is ideal for portable application requirements. Three packaging options are available and
include t he 8-pin (300 mils) DIP, 8-pin (150 mils) SO, and 8-pin (118 mils) μSOP.

OPERATION
The DS1804 is a single nonvo lat ile po tentiometer. The device has a tot al of 100 t ap-po int s inc lud in g t he
L- and H- t ermina ls. A t otal o f 99 resist ive segments exist between the L- and H- t erminals. These tap-
points are accessible to the W-terminal, whose position is controlled via a three-terminal control po rt. A
block diagram o f t he DS1804 is shown in Figure 1.
T he three -ter minal po rt of t he DS1804 pro vides an incre ment /decre ment inter face w hich is act ivated via a
chip-select input. This interface consists of the input signals
,
INC
, and U/
D
. These input signals
control a 7-bit up/down counter. The out put of the 7-bit up/do wn co unt er controls a 1 of 100 decoder to
select w iper pos ition. Additionally, this int erface pr ovides for a w iper st or age o peratio n us ing the
CS
and
INC
input c ont rol pin s . T he timin g diagra m fo r the t hree-t ermina l inter face contro l is shown in Fig ure 2.
PIN DESCRIPTIONS
VCC - Power Supply. T he DS1804 will suppor t supp ly volt ages ranging from +2. 7V to +5.5V.
GND - Ground.
H - High-Terminal Pot entio meter. This is t he high ter minal of the potentiometer. It is not required that
this terminal be connected to a potential greater than the L-terminal. Vo ltage applied to the H-terminal
cannot exceed the po wer-supply vo lt age, VCC, or go belo w ground.
L - Low-Terminal P ote ntiomete r. Th is is the low terminal of the potentiometer. It is not required that this
terminal be connected to a potential less than the H-terminal. Voltage applied to the L-terminal cannot
exceed the po wer-supply volt age, VCC, or go below ground.
W - Wiper of the Potentiometer. This pin is the wiper of the potentiometer. Its position on the resistor
array is controlled by the three-terminal control port. Voltage applied to the wiper cannot exceed the
power-supply volt age, VCC, or go below ground.
CS
- Chip Select. The
input is used to activate the control port of the DS1804. This input is active
low. When in a high-state, activity on the
INC
and U/
D
port pins will not affect or change wiper
position.

INC
will cause the

POWER-UP/POWER-DOWN CONDITIONS
On power-up, the DS1804 will lo ad the value o f EE PROM me mo r y int o t he wiper po sit ion r egister (o r 1
of 100 decoder). The value of this register can then be set to another wiper position if desired, by using
the three-terminal control port. On power-up, wiper position will be loaded within a maximum time
period of 500µs once the power-supply is stable. Additionally, the three-terminal interface port will be
act ive aft er 50ms.
On power-down, the wiper position register data will be lost. On the next device power-up, t he value o f
EE P ROM me mo ry wi ll be loaded into t he wiper po sitio n register.
On shipment from the factory, Maxim Integrated Products does not guarantee a specified EEPROM
memo ry va lue. T h is value s ho uld be set by the customer as need ed.
NONVOLA TILE WIPER STORAG E
Wiper positio n o f the DS1804 can be sto red using t he
INC
and
input s. Storage of the wiper posit ion
takes place whenever the
CS
input transitions from low-to-high while the
INC
is high. Once this
co nd itio n has o ccur r ed the valu e of the curr ent wiper position will be writte n to EEPROM memory.
The DS1804 is specified to accept 50,000 writes to EEPROM over 0°C to 70ºC before a wear-out
condition. After wear-out the DS1804 will still function and wiper position can be changed during
powered conditions using the three-terminal control port. However, on power-up the wiper-p osit io n w ill
be indet erminate.
ONE-TIME PROGRAMMABILITY (OTP)
The DS1804 can be eas ily used as an OTP device. The user of the DS1804 can trim the desired value o f
the wiper posit ion and set this position for storage as described above. Any activity through the three-
terminal port can then be prevented by connecting the
input pin to VCC. Also, an OTP application
does not adversely affect the number of times EEPROM is written, since EEPROM will only be loaded
and not written during a power-up or power-down condition.
On power-up, the DS1804 will load the current value of EEPROM memory into the wiper position
register.
