LM311 LM311 voltage comparator general description The LM311 is a voltage comparator that has input currents more than a hundred times lower than de- vices like the LM306 or LM710C. It is also de- signed to operate over a wider range of supply voltages: from standard +15V op amp supplies down to the single 5V supply used for {C logic. Its output is compatible with RTL, DTL and TTL as well as MOS circuits. Further, it can drive lamps or relays, switching voltages up to 40V at currents as high as 50 mA. features Voltage Comparators Maximum offset current: 50 nA Differential input voltage range: +30V @ Power consumption: 135 mW at 15V Both the input and the output of the LM311 can be isolated from system ground, and the output can drive loads referred to ground, the positive supply or the negative supply. Offset balancing and strobe capabitity are provided and outputs can be wire ORed. Although slower than the LM306 and LM710C (200 ns response time vs 40 ns) the device is also much less prone to spurious oscilla- tions. The LM311 has the same pin configuration as the LM306 and LM710C. =| Operates from single 5V supply m Maximum input current: 250 nA schematic diagram and auxiliary circuits * BALANCE/STACGAE BALANCE 6 5 . . . . v . *Pin connections shown on schematic diagram AL Ra i i j ms 00 and typical applications are for TO-5 package. a v R2 a6 HK KS | Offset Balancing Sas Bg ; 600 0 3 SH ., KL > a70 3 ne S RF as Six Six q au ye az J jrL~ ha tn a8 as STROBE ai 3 a9 noe +4 ay aK 3 fg) 4 ourpuT ay BY ou - a2 a 60 az WWAr aug . 110 023 5 | al { as + on > ans , \ so S are Aas aud ae 250 > 200 > 1 2K$ aA ma Increases typical comman made slew from 7.0V/is5 to 1BV/rs. The positive input voltage limit is 30V above the negative supply. The negative input voltage timit is equal to the negative supply voltage or 30V below the positive supply, whichever is less. Note 2:. The maximum junction temperature of the LM311 is 85C. For operating at elevated temperatures, devices in the TO-5 package must be derated based on a thermal resistance of 150C/W, junction to ambient, or 45C/W, junction to case. For the flat package, the derating is based on a thermal resistance of 185C/W when mounted on a 1/16-inch-thick epoxy glass board with ten, 0,03-inch-wide, 2-ounce copper conductors. The thermal resistance of the dual-in-line package is 100C/W, junction to ambient, Note 3: These specifications apply for Vg = 15V and 0C << Ta < 70C, unless otherwise specified. The offset voitage, offset current and bias current specifications apply for any supply voltage from a single 5V supply up to t15V suppties. Note 4: The offset voltages and offset currents given are the maximum values required to drive the output within a voit of either supply with 1 mA load. Thus, these parameters define an error band and take into account the worst case effects of voltage gain and input impedance. Note 5: The response time specified (see definitions) is for a 100 mV input step with 5 mV overdrive. 1-21 LLEWILM311 typical performance characteristics INPUT BIAS CURRENT (nA} INPUT BIAS CURRENT (nA) QUTPUT VOLTAGE {V) INPUT VOLTAGE (mv) OUTPUT VOLTAGE (V} INPUT VOLTAGE (mv) 400 300 200 100 225 200 175 150 126 100 75 50 25 a Input Bias Current RAISED PINS AND 8) Vg = 415 NORMAL 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 TEMPERATURE (C) input Characteristics -16 -12 -8 OIFFERENTIAL INPUT VOLTAGE (V} 4 0 4 = +15V Ta = 28C 12 Response Time for Various Input Overdrives 02 04 TIME (us) Response Time for Various Input Overdrives 1 2 TIME {us) COMMON MODE LIMITS (V)} INPUT OFFSET CURRENT (nA) ANPUT VOLTAGE (mV) OUTPUT VOLTAGE (v) GQUTPUT VOLTAGE (} (INPUT VOLTAGE (mV} 20 04 2 ny vo Nw aw Input Offset Current PINS 8) o Ww 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 TEMPERATURE (C) Common Mode Limits REFERRED TO 6 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 90 TEMPERATURE (C} Response Time for Various Input Overdrives Ty = 28C Q 02 04 06 TIME (us) Response Time for Various input Overdrives Q 1 2 i TIME {us) SATURATION VOLTAGE (V) OUTPUT VOLTAGE (Vv) EQUIVALENT INPUT OFFSET VOLTAGE (mV) SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT (mA) 100 Offset Error Ta = 26C 10k 100k 1M INPUT RESISTANCE (32) Transfer Function NORMAL Ry = th vit =aav FOLLOWER OUTPUT R, = 60022 Vi T, al -5 o 5 1 DIFFERENTIAL INPUT VOLTAGE (mV) Output Saturation Voltage Taz 0 10 20 30 40 OUTPUT CURRENT (mA) Output Limiting Characteristics TT, = 25C a 5 10 OUTPUT VOLTAGE {V) 07 O6 i) oa 0.3 02 0.1 (MW) NOTLY4ISSIO BIMOd 1-22typical performance characteristics (cont) Supply Current Supply Current 6 Ty = 25C | 5 {4 ae | Positive surety ob z = OUTPUT LOW = 4 - e z = = e& 3Fe POSITIVEAND]} & 5 NEGATIVE SUPPLY- 5 S 2 OUTPUT HIGH > z ' = POSITIVE AND s a NEGATIVE SUPPLY a 4 , || 0. 5 1 1 2 2 30 0 10 20 30 4 50 60 79 80 SUPPLY VOLTAGE (V) TEMPERATURE (C) typical applications MAGNETIC elcKUP Detector for Magnetic Transducer Zero Crossing Detector Driving MOS Switch ci 1000 oF 4h. 2 if Li tom i aw .
