General Description:
The TC4404/TC4405 are CMOS buffer-drivers
constructed with complementary MOS outputs, where
the drains of the totem-pole output have been left
separated so that individual connections can be made
to the pu ll-up and pul l-down sectio ns of the outp ut. This
allow s th e i ns erti on of d rain-curren t-li mi tin g res is to rs i n
the pul l-up and/ or pul l-down sec tions, a llowing t he user
to def i ne the r at e s of r is e an d fall fo r a c apac iti ve lo ad ;
or a re du ced ou tpu t s w ing , if driving a re si stive load, or
to limit base current, when driving a bipolar transistor.
Minimum rise and fall times, with no resistors, will be
less than 30 nsec for a 1000 pF load.
For driving MOSFETs in motor-control applications,
where slow-ON/fast-OFF operation is desired, these
devices are superior to the previously used technique
of adding a diode-resistor combination between the
driver output and the MOSFET, because they allow
accurate control of turn-ON, while maintaining fast turn-
OFF and max imu m nois e im mu nity for an OFF dev ice.
When used to drive bipolar transistors, these drivers
maintain the high speeds common to other Microchip
drivers. They allow insertion of a base current-limiting
resi stor, wh ile p rovidi ng a se parate half-o utpu t for f ast
turn-OFF. By proper positioning of the resistor, either
npn or pnp transistors can be driven.
For driving many loads in low-power regimes, these
drive rs, because th ey el imi na t e sh o ot-th rou gh current s
in the output stage, require significantly less power at
higher frequencies, and can be helpful in meeting
low-power budgets.

Because neith er drai n in a n outp ut is depen dent o n the
other, these devices can also be used as open-drain
buffer/drivers where both drains are available in one
device, thus minimizing chip count. Unused open
drains should be returned to the supply rail that their
device sources are connected to (pull-downs to
grou nd, pul l-ups to V DD), to prevent static damage. In
addition, in situations where timing resistors or other
means of limiting crossover currents are used, like
drains may be paralleled for greater current carrying
capacity.
These dev ices are built to operate in the mos t demand-
ing electrical environments. They will not latch-up
under any conditions within their power and voltage
ratings; they are not subject to damage when up to 5V
of no ise spiking of either polarit y occurs on their ground
pin; and they can accept, without damage or logic
upset, up to 1/2 amp of reverse current (of either
polarity) being forced back into their outputs. All
terminals are fully protected against up to 2 kV of
electrostatic discharge.

3.0 APPLICATIONS INFORMATION
3.1 Ci rcuit Layout Guidelines
Avoid long power supply and ground traces (added
inductance causes unwanted voltage transients). Use
power and ground planes wherever possible.
In addition, it is advisable that low ESR bypass capac-
itor s (4.7 F or 10 F tantalum) be placed as close to
the driver as possible. The driver should be physically
located as close to the device it is driving as possible to
minimize the length of the output trace.

Note the following details of the code protection feature on Microchip devices:
Microchip products meet the specification contained in their particular Microchip Data Sheet.
Microchip believes that it s family of products is one of the most secure families of its kind on the market today, when used in the
intended manner and under normal conditions.
There are dishonest and possibly illegal methods used to breach the code protection feature. All of these methods, to our
knowledge, require using the Microchip products in a manner outside the operating specifications contained in Microchip’s Data
Sheets. Most likely, the person doing so is engaged in theft of intellectual property.
Microchip is willing to work with the customer who is concerned about the integrity of their code.
Neither Microchip nor any other semiconductor manufacturer can guarantee the security of their code. Code protection does not
mean that we are guaranteeing the product as “unbreakable.
Code protection is c onstantly evolving. We a t Microc hip are co m mitted to continuously improving the code prot ect ion featur es of our
products. Attempts to break Microchip’ s code protection feature may be a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If such acts
allow unauthorized access to your software or other copyrighted work, you may have a right to sue for relief under that Act.
Microchip received ISO/TS-16949:2009 certification for its worldwide
headquarters, design and wafer fabrication facilities in Chandler and
Tempe, Arizona; Gresham, Oregon and design centers in California
and India. The Company’s quality system processes and procedures
are for its PIC® MCUs and dsPIC® DSCs, KEELOQ® code hopp ing
devices, Serial EEPROMs, microperiph erals, nonvolatile memory and
analog products. In addition, Microchip’s quality system for the design
and manufacture of development systems is ISO 9001:2000 certified.
