NPFSMC33351A/D Rev. 0, September-2000 New Product Fact Sheet MC33351A - Lithium Battery Protection Circuit for Three Battery Packs Overview The MC33351A is a monolithic battery protection circuit that maximizes capacity and battery life and protects against hazardous over-voltage and over-current condition. It is designed specifically for three cell lithium-ion batter y pack in laptop computer applications. The MC33351A features a cell-balancing feature that overcomes the typical situation where each battery cell has a slightly different rate of charge and discharge, leading to an unbalanced situation and a reduction in capacity for the entire pack. Other features of the MC33351A include a selectable cell voltage and a selectable charge interrupt voltage sensing mode. The device is housed in a low profile TSSOP-20 package. Features * Selectable Charge Interrupt Sensing Mode for Precise Cell Voltage Measurements * Programmable Over-Voltage Delay * Choice of Current Limit Sensing Elements (Low-Side Resistor or High-Side MOSFET Switches) * Programmable Discharge Current Limit Threshold and Shutdown Delay * Selectable Cell Voltage Balancing * Virtually Zero Current Sleepmode State when Cells are Discharged * Minimum External Components for Inclusion with Battery Pack * Low Profile TSSOP-20 Package Benefits * Maximizes Cell Capacity and Cycle Life * Selectable Cell Balancing Povides Higher Storage Capacity * Protects Against Hazardous Over-Voltage and Over-Current Conditions * Virtually Zero Current Sleepmode State when Cells are Discharged * Space and Cost Savings Minimum External Components for Inclusion in Battery Pack Low Profile, Surface Mount TSSOP-20 Package (c) Semiconductor Components Industries, LLC 2000 MC33351A - Lithium Battery Protection Circuit for Three Battery Packs Applications Ordering Information Literature * Lithium Battery Packs * Three Cell Rechargeable Battery Packs * Laptop Computers Part Number MC33351ADTB-1 MC33351ADTB-1R2 Package TSSOP-20 TSSOP-20 A complete data sheet containing full specifications, is available through ON Semiconductor's Literature Distribution Center or at onsemi.com/pub/mc33351A ON Semiconductor and are trademarks of Semiconductor Components Industries, LLC (SCILLC).
