For small to mid-sized networ ks, 3Com
Networ k Supervisor pro vides a pow e r-
ful y et easy-to-use tool that gra phically
discovers , ma ps, and displays network
links and IP devices, including 3Com
NBX®telephones and some popular
third-party products . It ma ps devices
and connections for easy monitoring of
stress lev els , setting thr esholds and alerts,
viewing netw or k events, g enerating
reports in user-defined f ormats , and
launching device configuration tools.
3Com Network Supervisor detailed
reports—on inventory, ports used,
and network topology—make it easier
to manage a network. The software's
advanced event processing speeds the
time needed to resolve network prob-
lems. Automated operations , intellig ent
defaults, as w ell as the ability to detect
network misconfigurations and offer
optimization suggestions give manager s
at all levels of experience support for
robust network supervision.

HP OpenVie w pro vides custom icons,
MIBs, and trap definitions so 3Com
devices discovered and monitor ed b y
HP OpenVie w ar e identified b y pr oduct
name and depicted as 3Com icons in
HP OpenView network maps. This
chargeable software installs as a plug-
in on a system running HP OpenView
Network Node Manager.

Automatic Discovery and Mapping
Networ k Supervisor automatically
discovers and ma ps all IP devices and
links on the local or specified subnets,
gathering additional manag ement details
for 3Com equipm ent and som e common
third-party devices. The netw or k ma p
can be displayed as either a Layer 3
subnet view or as a Layer 2 flat vie w.
Network Stress Monitoring
3Com Networ k Supervisor automati-
call y monitor s netw ork str ess f or all
“core” devices and links on the net-
wor k (hubs and switches), as w ell as
the stress levels of end stations, server s ,
and their links to the core devices. An
easy-to-read stress bar displays stress
lev els and offer s an instant vie w of net-
wor k performance. Mor e e xperienced
users can choose a more detailed vie w
of the important parameter v alues in
the consolidated stress bar.
Trace paths clearly show traffic routes
through the network to make trouble-
shooting faster. Detailed monitors can
be deployed as required.
Comprehensive Reporting
Networ k Supervisor pro vides detailed
reports of netw or k in v entory, ports used
and available on hubs and switches , and
networ k topology details. Separate
reports show network misconfigura-
tions and suggest wa ys to optimize the
networ k. Report formats can be cus-
tomized for sharing with management.
Easy-to-use Notifications and Alarms
Alarm forwarding options let mana g ers
al ways stay in touch with the network.
Any netw or k event can generate alerts
to proactively communicate potential
networ k issues . These alerts can be sent
by e-mail, audio, or visual pop-ups
within the ph ysical netw or k or thr ough
pagers and SMS messag es, and can start
third-party applications or scripts . In
ad dition, SNMP tra ps can be f orw ar ded
to other networ k management systems
such as HP OpenVie w.
To help solv e pr oblems f ast, a Smart
Ev ent Engine automatically detects and
classifies correlated and r ecurring ev ents .
This focuses the user on root cause
problems and lessens "event clutter ."
Network information can be down-
loaded to a Palm-compatible handheld
via a standard PC HotSync for tr ouble-
shooting or connecting new equipm ent.
Live Updates
With a single button click, 3Com
Network Supervisor checks the 3Com
website for new Networ k Supervisor
u pgrades and available device support
for the equipment in the managed
network. A simple interface assists in
downloading Network Supervisor
service packs, agent versions for
devices, and other updates.
Traffic Prioritization
A Network Supervisor wizard offers
quick and easy implementation of 3Com
SuperStack®3 Switch 4400 traffic priori-
tization by helping identify key
applications and servers . Voice traffic
from 3Com NBX telephone systems is
automatically given the highest prior-
ity—a k e y factor in converged network
management.

Bulk Agent Updates
To assure that agent software on
3Com products is always current, the
Advanced Package sends version sta-
tus reports to administrators and lets
them perform bulk agent updates as
needed. They can select to update all
of their 3Com products, all products
of a certain type, or make custom
selections from the current map for
maximum management flexibility.
Task Scheduling
Ke y tasks (Netw or k Discovery, Ag ent
Upgrade, Configuration Backup) can be
scheduled to run at regular intervals or
at convenient times in the future. If
desired, the y can run nightly to pro-
vide refr eshed content ev ery morning .

grated with 802.1x management

Optimized VLAN Management
3Com Network Supervisor Advanced
Package makes managing networks
configured with VLANs much easier.
