EdgeMakerTM Firmware
CX27510 Edge Stream Processor
Integrated Multi-Service Network Edge Solution
EdgeMakerTM delivers a new class of data link processing for network edge
applications. In contrast to hardwired devices, EdgeMaker is a comprehensive
off-the-shelf firmware solution delivering unique system-level features such as:
Multiple full-featured services that can run concurrently and be dynamically
reconfigured with no processor downtime. This allows system OEMs to
address new challenges faced by their customers. Enterprises deploying CPE
equipment based on EdgeMaker are insured against changing WAN service
offerings as well as evolving pricing plans. Carrier equipment can support any
service, any link, down to a DS0.
DiffServ-enabled services, supporting multiple classes per logical channel.
Voice, video, and multiple data classes can be prioritized on a single connection
to ensure optimal and desired network behavior.
A high-level API with consistent look-and-feel across all services. This API
accelerates time-to-market and allows for development leverage across multiple
applications/services.
Written specifically for the CX27510 Edge Stream Processor (ESP),
EdgeMaker
firmware provides communication services up to OC-3 rates over TDM, UTOPIA,
and xDSL interfaces. A powerful suite of development tools to ease system design,
create value-added applications, and adapt to new or changing standards is also
available.
Edge Stream Processing Services
EdgeMaker running on the CX27510 delivers a broad set of industry-standard
communication services which integrates packets and Nx56/64 Kbps TDM circuits
over IP, xDSL, and ATM network connections. The following services are
included:
Service-AAL1: Service-AAL1 is an I.363.1 compliant AAL1 SAR firmware
module capable of providing circuit emulation for all TDM interfaces utilizing
either structured (SDT) or unstructured data transfer (UDT). Service-AAL1
SDT can map an entire T1/E1 or selected DS0s from a link to an ATM
channel. It supports CAS and partial cell fill modes. Service-AAL1 UDT
provides circuit emulation for DS1 and E1s. Integrated SRTS or adaptive clock
support requires no external hardware.
Service-AAL2: Service-AAL2 is an I.363.2 compliant AAL2 SAR supporting
CPS layer switching, Traffic Management 4.0, and raw cell insertion and
extraction. Service-AAL2 supports 672 voice channels with typical CODECs.

Service-AAL5: Service-AAL5 is an I.363 compliant AAL5 SAR for bi-
directional data traffic up to OC-3, with support for Traffic Management 4.0
shaping, four traffic priorities, and four class of service queues per VC.
Service-IMA: Service-IMA is an ATM Forum Version 1.1 compliant cell
processing service supporting all protocol cell formats, frame formats, and state
behaviors for up to sixteen T1/E1 IMA links per group. IMA groups can be
used to transport a mixture of ATM AAL5, AAL2, and AAL1 services.
Service-IMA creates an IMA port which can be connected to other ATM-based
services or cell ports, e.g. UTOPIA.
Service-Frame: Service-Frame is a packet transmission facility that can be used
to implement packet based data link technologies including PPP and Frame
Relay. HDLC functions such as CRC-16, CRC-32, bit stuffing/de-stuffing,
FCS checking/generation and flag detection/generation are provided. HDLC
unchannelized links or for NxDS0 connections on
channelized links.
Hardware Features
The core of the CX27510 is the SWANTM processor, a network-optimized
processor, which combines the pipelined architecture of a RISC processor with the
CISC-like instruction set of a specialized communications processor. Standard
packet, cell, and circuit interfaces are tightly coupled with the high-performance
communications processing engine in order to support WAN edge applications.
The Level II compliant, packet-extended UTOPIA port operates as an 8-bit bi-
directional interface and supports master or slave mode. The UTOPIA port
supports 52, 56 and 60 byte cells and a POS PHY interface mode. The host
interface for the CX27510 is provided by a revision 2.2/2.1 compliant PCI
interface. Byte lane swap capabilities are provided for ease of design in Little
Endian systems. The TDM interfaces can support 24, 32, 64, 96 or 128 DS0
timeslots for T1/E1 interfaces or computer telephony busses. The TDM interfaces
provide inline CAS support, DS0 tri-state control, independent TX and RX clocks,
and multi-frame synchronization. Support for adaptive and SRTS clocking is
supported without need for external circuitry.

Application Examples
Integrated Access Devices
An integrated access device (IAD) incorporates several stand-alone
communications functions into one manageable, cost-effective solution. The
EdgeMaker/CX27510 combination is an ideal platform for such an application. By
using a CX27510 ESP in the depicted WAN access card configuration, high levels
of networking integration can be achieved on a single service card and a common
software platform.
In this example, the EdgeMaker/CX27510 combination is used to simultaneously
manage both LAN data and voice (compressed and uncompressed) traffic between
the enterprise and WAN. The breadth of interfaces inherent to the CX27510
architecture permits the simultaneous servicing of data and voice along a multitude
of WAN edge infrastructures including NxT1/E1, Frame Relay, xDSL, ATM, OC-
3, and DS3. EdgeMaker firmware delivers industry-standard, best of breed, multi-
serving across all interfaces.
Multi-Service Edge Concentrator
Another application where the processing power and versatility of the
EdgeMaker/CX27510 platform can be exploited is multi-service edge switching
functions. The TDM interfaces (up to 16 links) connect gluelessly to T1/E1 framer
chips and offer flexible support for a variety of circuitbased applications. At the
same time, the Level I/II compliant bi-directional UTOPIA interface built into the
CX27510 provides a means of appending router tags and transmitting over to a
switching fabric.
