1. Driving Circuit for Relays
1. Tomakesureofcorrectrelayoperation,applyrated
voltagetotherelaycoil.
2. InputvoltageforDCcoil:
CompleteDCvoltageisbestforstableoperationofthe
coilpower.Whenusingapowersupplycontainingaripple
voltage,suppresstheripplefactorwithin5%.When
powerissuppliedthrougharecticationcircuit,relay
operatingcharacteristics,suchaspickupvoltageand
dropoutvoltage,dependontheripplefactor.Connecta
smoothingcapacitorforbetteroperatingcharacteristicsas
shownbelow.

4. Leakagecurrentwhilerelayisoff:

Whendrivinganelementatthesametimeastherelay
isoperating,specialconsiderationisneededwhen
designingthecircuit.Asshownintheincorrectcircuit
exampleabove,leakagecurrent(Io)owsthroughthe
relaycoilwhiletherelayisoff.Leakagecurrentcauses
coilreleasefailureoradverselyaffectsthevibrationand
shockresistance.Designacircuitasshowninthecorrect
example.
5. Surgesuppressionfortransistordrivingcircuits:
Whentherelaycoilisturnedoff,ahigh-voltagepulseis
generated.Besuretoconnectadiodetosuppressthe
counterelectromotiveforce.Then,thecoilreleasetime
becomesslightlylonger.Toshortenthecoilreleasetime,
connectaZenerdiodebetweenthecollectorandemitter
ofthecontrollingtransistor.SelectaZenerdiodewitha
Zenervoltageslightlyhigherthanthepowervoltage.

2. Protection for Relay Contacts
1. Thecontactratingsshowmaximumvalues.Makesurethat
thesevaluesarenotexceeded.Whenaninrushcurrent
owsthroughtheload,thecontactmaybecomewelded.If
thisisthecase,connectacontactprotectioncircuit,such
asacurrentlimitingresistor.
2.Contactprotectioncircuit:
Whenswitchinganinductiveload,arcingcausescarbides
toformonthecontacts,resultinginincreasedcontact
resistance.Inconsiderationofcontactreliability,contact
life,andnoisesuppression,useofasurgeabsorbing
circuitisrecommended.Notethatthereleasetimeofthe
loadbecomesslightlylonger.Checktheoperationusing
anactualload.Incorrectuseofacontactprotectioncircuit
willadverselyaffectswitchingcharacteristics.Fourtypical
examplesofcontactprotectioncircuitsareshowninthe
followingtable:

inarcsuppressionwhenopeningthe
contacts.But,thecapacitorischarged
whilethecontactsareopened.When
thecontactsareclosed,thecapacitor
isdischargedthroughthecontacts,
increasingthepossibilityofcontact
welding.

Thisprotectioncircuitisveryeffectiveinarcsuppression
whenopeningthecontacts.But,whenthecontactsare
closed,acurrentowstochargethecapacitor,causing
contactwelding.
Generally,switchingaDCinductiveloadismoredifcultthanswitching
aDCresistiveload.Usinganappropriatearcsuppressorwillimprove
theswitchingcharacteristicsofaDCinductiveload.
3. Notes on PC Board Mounting
•Whenmounting2ormorerelaysonaPCboard,keepa
minimumspacingof5mmineachdirection.
•Manualsoldering:Soldertheterminalsat350°Cwithin
3sec.Usingasolderingironof60W(Sn-Ag-Cutype)is
recommended.
•Auto-soldering:Solderat
250°Cwithin4to5sec.
•Becausetheterminalislledwithepoxyresin,donot
excessivelysolderorbendtheterminal.Otherwise,air
tightnesswilldegrade.
•Avoidtouchingtherelaycoverortheepoxylledterminal
withthesolderingiron.
•Useanon-corrosiveresinux.
4. Others
1. Generalnotice:
•Tomaintaintheinitialcharacteristics,donotdropor
shocktherelay.
•Therelaycovercannotberemovedfromthebaseduring
normaloperation.Tomaintaintheinitialcharacteristics,
donotremovetherelaycover.
•Usetherelayinenvironmentsfreefromdust,sulfur
dioxide(SO2),hydrogensulde(H2S),ororganicgases.
•Makesurethatthecoilvoltagedoesnotexceedthe
applicablecoilvoltagerange.
2. Connectingoutputstoelectroniccircuits:
Whentheoutputisconnectedtoaloadwhichresponds
veryquickly,suchasanelectroniccircuit,contactbouncing
causesincorrectoperationoftheload.Takethefollowing
measuresintoconsideration.
a.Connectanintegrationcircuit.
b.Suppressthepulsevoltageduetobouncingwithinthe
noisemarginoftheload.
3. Donotuserelaysinthevicinityofstrongmagneticelds,
asthismayaffectrelayoperation.
