Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V SMT module should be connected to a low-impedance source. A highly inductive source can affect the stability of the module. An input capacitance must be placed directly adjacent to the input pin of the module, to minimize input ripple voltage and ensure module stability. In a typical application, 6x47 F low-ESR tantalum capacitors (AVX part #: TPSE476M025R0100, 47F 25V 100 m ESR tantalum capacitor) will be sufficient to provide adequate ripple voltage at the input of the module. To further minimize ripple voltage at the input, very low ESR ceramic capacitors are recommended at the input of the module. Figure 26 shows input ripple voltage (mVp-p) for various outputs with 6x47 F tantalum capacitors and with 6x22 F ceramic capacitor (TDK part #: C4532X5R1C226M) at full load. 350 VO (+) Input Ripple Voltage (mVp-p) COPPER STRIP RESISTIVE LOAD 1uF . 10uF SCOPE COM GROUND PLANE NOTE: All voltage measurements to be taken at the module terminals, as shown above. Page 10 GE Energy Data Sheet 12V Austin SuperLynxTMII: SMT Non-Isolated DC-DC Power Modules 8.3Vdc -14Vdc input; 0.75Vdc to 5.5Vdc output; 16A Output Current Design Considerations (continued) Output Filtering The Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V SMT module is designed for low output ripple voltage and will meet the maximum output ripple specification with 1 F ceramic and 10 F tantalum capacitors at the output of the module. However, additional output filtering may be required by the system designer for a number of reasons. First, there may be a need to further reduce the output ripple and noise of the module. Second, the dynamic response characteristics may need to be customized to a particular load step change. Safety Considerations For safety agency approval the power module must be installed in compliance with the spacing and separation requirements of the end-use safety agency standards, i.e., UL 60950-1, CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1-03, and VDE 0850:2001-12 (EN60950-1) Licensed. For the converter output to be considered meeting the requirements of safety extra-low voltage (SELV), the input must meet SELV requirements. The power module has extralow voltage (ELV) outputs when all inputs are ELV. The input to these units is to be provided with a fast-acting fuse with a maximum rating of 15A in the positive input lead. To reduce the output ripple and improve the dynamic response to a step load change, additional capacitance at the output can be used. Low ESR polymer and ceramic capacitors are recommended to improve the dynamic response of the module. For stable operation of the module, limit the capacitance to less than the maximum output capacitance as specified in the electrical specification table. Page 11 GE Energy Data Sheet 12V Austin SuperLynxTMII: SMT Non-Isolated DC-DC Power Modules 8.3Vdc -14Vdc input; 0.75Vdc to 5.5Vdc output; 16A Output Current Feature Description VIN+ Remote On/Off I ON/OFF Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V SMT power modules feature an On/Off pin for remote On/Off operation. Two On/Off logic options are available in the Austin SuperLynxTM II series modules. Positive Logic On/Off signal, device code suffix "4", turns the module ON during a logic High on the On/Off pin and turns the module OFF during a logic Low. Negative logic On/Off signal, no device code suffix, turns the module OFF during logic High and turns the module ON during logic Low. ON/OFF For positive logic modules, the circuit configuration for using the On/Off pin is shown in Figure 27. The On/Off pin is an open collector/drain logic input signal (Von/Off) that is referenced to ground. During a logic-high (On/Off pin is pulled high internal to the module) when the transistor Q1 is in the Off state, the power module is ON. Maximum allowable leakage current of the transistor when Von/off = VIN,max is 10A. Applying a logiclow when the transistor Q1 is turned-On, the power module is OFF. During this state VOn/Off must be less than 0.3V. When not using positive logic On/off pin, leave the pin unconnected or tie to VIN. GND VIN+ MODULE R2 ON/OFF I ON/OFF + VON/OFF + VON/OFF PWM Enable R1 Q2 CSS Q1 R2 _ Figure 28. Circuit configuration for using negative logic On/OFF. Overcurrent Protection To provide protection in a fault (output overload) condition, the unit is equipped with internal current-limiting circuitry and can endure current limiting continuously. At the point of current-limit inception, the unit enters hiccup mode. The unit operates normally once the output current is brought back into its specified range. The typical average output current during hiccup is 3A. Input Undervoltage Lockout At input voltages below the input undervoltage lockout limit, module operation is disabled. The module will begin to operate at an input voltage above the undervoltage lockout turn-on threshold. Q2 R1 PWM Enable R3 Q1 Q3 CSS R4 GND MODULE Rpull-up _ Figure 27. Circuit configuration for using positive logic On/OFF. Overtemperature Protection To provide protection in a fault condition, the unit is equipped with a thermal shutdown circuit. The unit will shutdown if the thermal reference point Tref, exceeds 125oC (typical), but the thermal shutdown is not intended as a guarantee that the unit will survive temperatures beyond its rating. The module will automatically restarts after it cools down. For negative logic On/Off devices, the circuit configuration is shown is Figure 28. The On/Off pin is pulled high with an external pull-up resistor (typical Rpull-up = 68k, +/- 5%). When transistor Q1 is in the Off state, logic High is applied to the On/Off pin and the power module is Off. The minimum On/off voltage for logic High on the On/Off pin is 2.5 Vdc. To turn the module ON, logic Low is applied to the On/Off pin by turning ON Q1. When not using the negative logic On/Off, leave the pin unconnected or tie to GND. Page 12 GE Energy Data Sheet 12V Austin SuperLynxTMII: SMT Non-Isolated DC-DC Power Modules 8.3Vdc -14Vdc input; 0.75Vdc to 5.5Vdc output; 16A Output Current Feature Descriptions (continued) Output Voltage Programming The output voltage of the Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V can be programmed to any voltage from 0.75Vdc to 5.5Vdc by connecting a resistor (shown as Rtrim in Figure 29) between the Trim and GND pins of the module. Without an external resistor between the Trim and GND pins, the output of the module will be 0.7525Vdc. To calculate the value of the trim resistor, Rtrim for a desired output voltage, use the following equation: 10500 Rtrim = - 1000 Vo - 0.7525 Rtrim is the external resistor in Vo is the desired output voltage For example, to program the output voltage of the Austin SuperLynxTM II module to 1.8V, Rtrim is calculated as follows: 10500 - 1000 1.8 - 0.75 Rtrim = Rtrim = 9.024k The amount of power delivered by the module is defined as the voltage at the output terminals multiplied by the output current. When using the trim feature, the output voltage of the module can be increased, which at the same output current would increase the power output of the module. Care should be taken to ensure that the maximum output power of the module remains at or below the maximum rated power (Pmax = Vo,set x Io,max). Voltage Margining Output voltage margining can be implemented in the Austin SuperLynxTM II modules by connecting a resistor, Rmargin-up, from the Trim pin to the ground pin for margining-up the output voltage and by connecting a resistor, Rmargin-down, from the Trim pin to the Output pin for margining-down. Figure 30 shows the circuit configuration for output voltage margining. The POL Programming Tool, available at www.gecriticalpower.com under the Design Tools section, also calculates the values of Rmargin-up and Rmargin-down for a specific output voltage and % margin. This is accomplished via an additional sequencing pin. When not using the sequencing feature, either tie the SEQ pin to VIN or leave it unconnected. When an analog voltage is applied to the SEQ pin, the output voltage tracks this voltage until the output reaches the setpoint voltage. The SEQ voltage must be set higher than the set-point voltage of the module. The output voltage follows the voltage on the SEQ pin on a one-to-one volt basis. By connecting multiple modules together, customers can get multiple modules to track their output voltages to the voltage applied on the SEQ pin. For proper voltage sequencing, first, input voltage is applied to the module. The On/Off pin of the module is left unconnected (or tied to GND for negative logic modules or tied to VIN for positive logic modules) so that the module is ON by default. After applying input voltage to the module, a minimum of 10msec delay is required before applying voltage on the SEQ pin. During this time, potential of 50mV ( 10 mV) is maintained on the SEQ pin. After 10msec delay, an analog voltage is applied to the SEQ pin and the output voltage of the module will track this voltage on a one-to-one volt bases until output reaches the set-point voltage. To initiate simultaneous shutdown of the modules, the SEQ pin voltage is lowered in a controlled manner. Output voltage of the modules tracks the voltages below their set-point voltages on a one-to-one basis. A valid input voltage must be maintained until the tracking and output voltages reach ground potential to ensure a controlled shutdown of the modules. The amount of power delivered by the module is defined as the output voltage multiplied by the output current (Vo x Io). When using Remote Sense, the output voltage of the module can increase, which if the same output is maintained, increases the power output by the module. Make sure that the maximum output power of the module remains at or below the maximum rated power. When the Remote Sense feature is not being used, connect the Remote Sense pin to output pin of the module. When using the EZ-SEQUENCETM feature to control start-up of the module, pre-bias immunity feature during start-up is disabled. The pre-bias immunity feature of the module relies on the module being in the diode-mode during start-up. When using the EZ-SEQUENCETM feature, modules goes through an internal set-up time of 10msec, and will be in synchronous rectification mode when voltage at the SEQ pin is applied. This will result in sinking current in the module if pre-bias voltage is present at the output of the module. When pre-bias immunity during start-up is required, the EZ-SEQUENCETM feature must be disabled. For additional guidelines on using EZ-SEQUENCETM feature of Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V, contact GE technical representative for preliminary application note on output voltage sequencing using Austin Lynx II series. Remote Sense The Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V SMT power modules have a Remote Sense feature to minimize the effects of distribution losses by regulating the voltage at the Remote Sense pin (See Figure 31). The voltage between the Sense pin and Vo pin must not exceed 0.5V. January 14, 2016 (c)2016 General Electric Company. All rights reserved. Considerations include ambient temperature, airflow, module power dissipation, and the need for increased reliability. A reduction in the operating temperature of the module will result in an increase in reliability. The thermal data presented here is based on physical measurements taken in a wind tunnel. The test set-up is shown in Figure 33. Note that the airflow is parallel to the long axis of the module as shown in figure 32. The derating data applies to airflow in either direction of the module's long axis. 25.4_ (1.0) Wind Tunnel PWBs Power Module 76.2_ (3.0) x 7.24_ (0.285) Probe Location for measuring airflow and ambient temperature Air flow Figure 33. Thermal Test Set-up. Heat Transfer via Convection Increased airflow over the module enhances the heat transfer via convection. Thermal derating curves showing the maximum output current that can be delivered by various module versus local ambient temperature (TA) for natural convection and up to 1m/s (200 ft./min) are shown in the Characteristics Curves section. Figure 32. Tref Temperature measurement location. The thermal reference points, Tref 1 and Tref2 used in the specifications of thermal derating curves are shown in Figure 32. For reliable operation these temperatures should not exceed 125oC. The output power of the module should not exceed the rated power of the module (Vo,set x Io,max). The modules are fitted with a label designed to provide a large surface area for pick and place operations. The label meets all the requirements for surface mount processing, as well as safety standards, and is able to withstand reflow temperatures of up to 300oC. The label also carries product information such as product code, serial number and location of manufacture. time must be allowed to fuse the plating on the connection to ensure a reliable solder joint. There are several types of SMT reflow technologies currently used in the industry. These surface mount power modules can be reliably soldered using natural forced convection, IR (radiant infrared), or a combination of convection/IR. For reliable soldering the solder reflow profile should be established by accurately measuring the modules CP connector temperatures. REFLOW TEMP (C) SuperLynxTM REFLOW TIME (S) Figure 35. Reflow Profile for Tin/Lead (Sn/Pb) process. Figure 34. Pick and Place Location. The module weight has been kept to a minimum by using open frame construction. Even so, these modules have a relatively large mass when compared to conventional SMT components. Variables such as nozzle size, tip style, vacuum pressure and pick & placement speed should be considered to optimize this process. The minimum recommended nozzle diameter for reliable operation is 3mm. The maximum nozzle outer diameter, which will safely fit within the allowable component spacing, is 8 mm max. MAX TEMP SOLDER (C) Nozzle Recommendations Figure 36. Time Limit Curve Above 205oC for Tin/Lead (Sn/Pb) process. Tin Lead Soldering The Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V SMT power modules are lead free modules and can be soldered either in a lead-free solder process or in a conventional Tin/Lead (Sn/Pb) process. It is recommended that the customer review data sheets in order to customize the solder reflow profile for each application board assembly. The following instructions must be observed when soldering these units. Failure to observe these instructions may result in the failure of or cause damage to the modules, and can adversely affect long-term reliability. In a conventional Tin/Lead (Sn/Pb) solder process peak reflow temperatures are limited to less than 235oC. Typically, the eutectic solder melts at 183oC, wets the land, and subsequently wicks the device connection. Sufficient January 14, 2016 (c)2016 General Electric Company. All rights reserved. C (Moisture/Reflow Sensitivity Classification for Nonhermetic Solid State Surface Mount Devices) for both Pb-free solder profiles and MSL classification procedures. This standard provides a recommended forced-air-convection reflow profile based on the volume and thickness of the package (table 4-2). The suggested Pb-free solder paste is Sn/Ag/Cu (SAC). The recommended linear reflow profile using Sn/Ag/Cu solder is shown in Figure. 37. Figure 37. Recommended linear reflow profile using Sn/Ag/Cu solder. MSL Rating The Austin SuperLynx II 12V SMT modules have a MSL rating of 3. Storage and Handling The recommended storage environment and handling procedures for moisture-sensitive surface mount packages is detailed in J-STD-033 Rev. A (Handling, Packing, Shipping and Use of Moisture/Reflow Sensitive Surface Mount Devices). Moisture barrier bags (MBB) with desiccant are required for MSL ratings of 2 or greater. These sealed packages should not be broken until time of use. Once the original package is broken, the floor life of the product at conditions of 30C and 60% relative humidity varies according to the MSL rating (see J-STD-033A). The shelf life for dry packed SMT packages will be a minimum of 12 months from the bag seal date, when stored at the following conditions: < 40 C, < 90% relative humidity. Post Solder Cleaning and Drying Considerations Post solder cleaning is usually the final circuit-board assembly process prior to electrical board testing. The result of inadequate cleaning and drying can affect both the reliability of a power module and the testability of the finished circuit-board assembly. For guidance on appropriate soldering, cleaning and drying procedures, refer to Board Mounted Power Modules: Soldering and Cleaning Application Note (AN04-001).
