RF Monolithics, Inc. (RFM) (NASDAQ: RFMI), celebrating over 25 years of low-power wireless solutions, is a leading designer, devel-
oper, manufacturer and supplier of radio frequency wireless solutions enabling wireless connectivity for the automotive, consumer, indus-
trial, medical and communications markets worldwide, allowing our customers to provide products and services that are both cost
effective and superior in performance. RFM is a QS9000 & TS16949 certified suppler. RFM's wireless solutions reach the market through
mature worldwide sales and distribution channels and are supported by industry leading customer service. RFM's business lines include
the following product categories:
SAW Resonators
Low-power SAW resonators are used as frequency control elements in Transmitter and Receiver LO circuits. These components are
essential to the miniature radio frequency transmitters and receivers that enable a variety of wireless consumer, automotive, industrial,
medical and commercial applications. Due to the superior performance of our surface-mount resonators, RFM is one of the world's larg-
est manufacturers of these types of products. RFM manufactures reliable, high performance, low cost components in a variety of very
small surface-mount packages as well as the traditional TO-39 "metal can" package.
SAW Narrowband Filters
The dramatic increase in the deployment of wireless applications has meant that the use of Narrow band SAW front-end filters is becom-
ing a necessity in a variety of wireless links. RFM's SAW Coupled Resonator filter components are used as Narrowband front end filters
for Receivers to reject strong out of band signals. RFM has an extensive offering of low cost, rugged, narrow-band SAW front end filters
in a broad range of frequencies and a variety of small packages. These low cost front end filters exhibit excellent rejection characteris-
tics, low insertion loss and superior temperature stability.
SAW RF/IF Filters
The Filter product line offers a variety of standard and custom bandpass filters for radio frequency (RF), intermediate frequency (IF) and
other applications. The operating frequencies of these filters range from 40 MHz to 1.6 GHz. These filters are available in a variety of
leaded and surface-mount packages. Applications include a variety of Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) subscriber platforms, cellular
subscriber terminals, base stations, and repeaters for GSM, TD-SCDMA, CDMA, TDMA, W-CDMA, and Wireless Local Loop (WLL).
Other applications of these filters include Global Positioning Satellite (GPS), Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) modems, Wireless
Local Area Network (WLAN), CATV infrastructure, and Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET).
RFM also designs and manufactures SAW delay lines and notch filters. These are available on a custom design basis.
Short Range Radios
RFM's Short range radios allow customers without extensive RF resources and experience to implement effective wireless data commu-
nications and control links. RFM's products are ideal for short-range wireless data communications applications where a diverse feature
set, small size, low power consumption, minimal external components and low cost are required. Products are available on all major low-
power radio frequencies used throughout the world. Both two-way data-link and one-way control-link/telemetry applications are sup-
ported.
The Short Range radio product line is divided into two major categories: Virtual Wire Hybrid radios and Single chip RFIC radios. Devel-
opment kits and Evaluation boards are available that allow customers to quickly implement low-power wireless communications links.
Embedded Wireless Modules
Embedded wireless modules provide a fully functional communications solution that is easy to build into equipment, machinery or other
devices. Wireless modules include a radio, a microcontroller, I/O capabilities and on-board software that implements the communications
functions. The software in all RF Monolithics wireless modules provides wireless mesh networking communications for maximum range,
flexibility and reliability. The modules use low power radios and are certified according to unlicensed radio regulations, so the modules
can be incorporated into OEM products without requiring any further regulatory certification.
Embedded wireless modules provide wireless connectivity in many of the same applications that are served by short-range radio prod-
ucts, but where a company chooses not to design in a short-range radio due to limited engineering resources, tight schedule constraints,
smaller volumes of products, or insufficient RF design engineering and manufacturing expertise.
Frequency Control Modules
RFM's Frequency Control devices are SAW stabilized clocks and oscillators with operating frequencies between 200 MHz and 1.8 GHz.
They have tolerances of 100ppm basic stability or the ability to tune to lock to a more stable system clock. A variety of crystal based prod-
ucts are also available. These products are small, high performance devices used in both time and frequency domain applications. Appli-
cations range from digital communication systems, high performance analog and digital radios, IFF interrogators & transponders,
instruments, point to point microwave communications systems, GPS systems, and other RF equipment with RF & IF needs in the above
frequency ranges.
SAWResonators
3
SAW Resonators
RFM provides a large selection of discrete SAW resonators in a
broad range of frequencies from 300 MHz to over 1 GHz. These
products are designed to be the frequency control element in
transmitters and receiver local oscillators. Their use allows
reduced receiver bandwidths, which results in improved sensitivity
and immunity to interference. Tighter center frequency tolerances
are becoming popular primarily in Europe. RFM can provide as
tight as ±50 kHz currently. These devices are quartz stabilized to
ensure maximum temperature performance in a variety of
applications.
The SAW Resonator product family includes one and two-port
types. The RO series is a line of true one-port devices with a
lumped element model that is similar to that of a bulk crystal
device. One-port resonators are typically used in modified
Colpitts oscillator configurations where the resonator is connected
between the base of a transistor and ground.
RO resonator products are packaged in both the traditional TO39
and a variety of surface-mount packages. The TO39 parts are
shipped in antistatic shipping tubes and the SMT parts are
shipped in tape-and-reel. RFM is currently manufacturing both
the TO39 and SMT versions of one-port resonators in
high volumes.
Applications
These systems are typically required in applications such as auto-
motive keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring, door and gate
openers, personal and home security, automated meter readers,
wireless point of sale terminals, bar code readers, identification
tags, and computer peripherals.

SAW Narrowband Filters
RFM provides a large selection of low-loss narrowband front end
filters for all major frequencies used in low-power unlicensed com-
munications equipment ranging from 300-1000 MHz. Coupled-
resonator filter technology is used in the RF series of compo-
nents. These devices are used as narrowband front-end filters to
reject strong out-of-band signals. Typical bandwidths are
600-900 kHz with typical ultimate out-of-band rejection of 50 dB.
Special rejection is provided at key points such as -10.7 MHz for
local oscillator rejection and -21.4 MHz for the image spurious
response in typical superhet receivers.
Optimum implementation of this filter technology is accomplished
when the filter is matched on both input and output ports. This
matching is typically a simple inductor-capacitor network. In addi-
tion to matching, careful attention to circuit board layout is also
important to achieve optimum filter performance.

ShortRangeRadios
Short Range Radios
Short Range Radio systems transmit from -40 to 15 dBm of RF
power and operate over distances of 3 to 200 meters. Once certi-
fied to comply with local low-power unlicensed radio regulations,
these systems do not require a user license or "air time fees" for
operation. New applications for low-power wireless are emerging
continuously.
RFM products have supported a strong customer base in the
Short range radio space for over a decade. The availability of
RFM's enhanced, comprehensive product offering will strengthen
and build upon that customer base.

RF Monolithics' embedded wireless modules provide low power
mesh networking solutions. These modules provide complete
wireless communications that can be easily added to products in
a wide range of applications, including:
Monitoring and control of industrial equipment
Automated utility meter reading
Active RFID
Building automation
Oil & gas production and distribution monitoring
Industrial automation
Security and access control
Home automation
Embedded wireless modules enable wireless connectivity to be
added to a product quickly and easily with a proven, pre-certified
solution. Using modules avoids the time and effort of designing an
RF-based solution from scratch, selecting and integrating compo-
nents, and developing wireless networking software. Using mod-
ules also eliminates the considerable risk inherent in designing a
working wireless networking solution.
RF Monolithics' embedded wireless modules are designed with
the features that allow them to serve a wide range of applications:
Relatively long range communication between nodes with
modest data rates
Very low current consumption for long life operation
on batteries
Wide operating temperature range for industrial and
outdoor applications
On-board serial, analog and digital I/O
Development kits to enable rapid application development
DM1800 Inexpensive Mesh Networking
The RF Monolithics DM1800 Module Family is an inexpensive
embedded solution for small mesh networking applications of sev-
eral hundred nodes. The DM1800 module family consists of spe-
cialized nodes that function as end node connections to
equipment, as routers to provide mesh networking connections
among nodes, or as the base station to control the network and
manage communications in it. The DM1800 module is based on
an RF Monolithics Virtual Wire™ radio and Microchip PIC micro-
controller, and is ideal for applications that require long-life opera-
tion on batteries. The DM1800 uses the RF Monolithics
miniMESH™ networking protocol software to provide extended
wireless coverage and reliable communications.
DM2100 Large Data Collection Networking
The RF Monolithics DM2100 Module incorporates a sophisticated
mesh networking protocol designed for data collection applica-
tions of a large population of fixed nodes. Each DM2100 module
is a fully function mesh networking node that can collect data from
its local equipment and also provide relay routing for messages
from other nodes. The DM2100 is based on an RF Monolithics
Virtual Wire radio and a Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontrol-
ler that supports its sophisticated networking software together
with long-life operation on batteries. The DM2100 uses the SOS-
OEA™ mesh networking protocol software from Nokota.

RFM retains a long history of providing stable, SAW based fre-
quency control products for computer timing, analog communica-
tions, test instrumentation and military applications. In addition,
RFM manufactures optical timing products based on our patented
"Diff Sine" technology to meet the increasing demand for band-
width in communication systems. These products have been spe-
cifically developed for applications such as dense wave division
multiplexing (DWDM) equipment where timing integrity and elimi-
nation of system noise in circuits are critical.
Example applications include:
Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital
Hierarchy (SDH) Equipment
DWDM Backbone Timing and Recovery
Terabit Routers
The OP4005B and OP4005B-1 are both 622.08 MHz differential
clocks with near perfect symmetry and extremely low jitter with or
without noise on the power planes. The OP4006B is a 666.5 MHz
Clock for forward error correction timing. RFM's "Diff Sine" archi-
tecture is the basis of each of these high performance optical
products. Parts under development include the SC3033B product,
centered at 1.0 GHz for various high speed applications.
The OPB series along with the SCB series Clocks are also used
for timing on ultra high speed A to D converter applications and
other digital radio applications as well. A variety of crystal based
products are also available. These products are small, high per-
formance devices used in both time and frequency domain
applications.
