Temperature Responsive Reed Switches
For home electric appliances, industrial equipment, and all other
fields, there is demand for system equipment with increased
safety, performance, and functionality.
TDK temperature-responsive reed switches responds to these
requirements:
(1) Excellent precision of the temperature response operation
point.
(2) Long service life with little change over time.
(3) Direct control type temperature switch that provides both a
sensing and contact mechanism.
Demand for these products has grown due to such excellent char-
acteristics.
TDK combined ferrite core and applied magnetism technology to
provide temperature-responsive reed switches that have high pre-
cision, long life, and high reliability. TDK has developed a group of
products that fulfills a wide range of requirements.
CONSTRUCTION AND PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The basic structure of a temperature-responsive reed switch com-
prises a temperature-responsive ferrite magnet and a reed switch.
The reed switch is a magnetically responsive type switch that is
made by sealing two reeds, that are constructed from a magnetic
material, within a glass tube. A gap is formed at the center of the
switch between these reeds.
This reed switch is characterized in that the gap contact closes in
response to an axial direction magnetic field. At a characteristic
temperature, the saturation magnetic flux density of the tempera-
ture-responsive ferrite suddenly changes. The ferrite magnets con-
trol the magnetic flux so that formation of a magnetic circuit by the
reed switch and the ferrite magnets makes possible ON/OFF con-
trol of the reed switch contact.
In response to rising temperature, the contact closes for the make-
contact type switch (M type, normally open), and the contact opens
for the break-contact type switch (B type, normally closed).
FEATURES
• High accuracy switching temperature.
• Long service life.
These products have a long service life since the contacts of the
reed switch are sealed in a tube containing inert gas and the
reeds are unaffected by metal fatigue, etc.
• Excellent resistance to environmental conditions.
• Easy to use due to simplification of circuit design.
