SparkFun Serial Enabled LCD Backpack
LCD-00258 ROHS
3
DESCRIPTION FEATURES DOCUMENTS
The SparkFun Serial Enabled LCD Backpack allows you to control a parallel
based LCD over a single-wire serial interface. The SerLCD backpack takes care
of all the HD44780 commands allowing seamless integration with any micro that
can communicate over a wide range of TTL serial baud rates. The SerLCD
currently supports 16 and 20 character wide screens with 2 or 4 lines of display.
Communication with SerLCD requires 5V TTL serial at a default baud rate of
9600bps (8-N-1). You can adjust the baud to any standard rate between 2400
and 38400bps. The power, ground and RX pins are all broken out to a 3.5mm
pitch screw terminal.
SerLCD has the ability to dim the backlight to conserve power if needed. There
is also a potentiometer on the backpack to adjust the contrast.
Note: The SerLCD v2.5 Datasheet incorrectly identifies the PIC as a 16F688,
when it’s actually a 16LF88. Sorry for blowing your mind.

SKILLS NEEDED
Core Skill: Soldering
This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.
Skill Level: Noob - Some basic soldering is required, but it is limited to a just a few pins, basic through-hole soldering, and couple (if
any) polarized components. A basic soldering iron is all you should need.

Core Skill: DIY
Whether it's for assembling a kit, hacking an enclosure, or creating your own parts; the DIY skill is all about knowing how to use tools and the
techniques associated with them.
Skill Level: Noob - Basic assembly is required. You may need to provide your own basic tools like a screwdriver, hammer or scissors.
Power tools or custom parts are not required. Instructions will be included and easy to follow. Sewing may be required, but only with
included patterns.

Core Skill: Programming
If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about
communication and code.
Skill Level: Rookie - You will need a better fundamental understand of what code is, and how it works. You will be using beginner-
level software and development tools like Arduino. You will be dealing directly with code, but numerous examples and libraries are
available. Sensors or shields will communicate with serial or TTL.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping
If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and
know the ins and outs of electronics.
Skill Level: Noob - You don't need to reference a datasheet, but you will need to know basic power requirements.

ok,but !!

The I2C Backpack did eventually work. I had a lot of trouble finding and installing the files to make it work.
working with files in the Arduino IDE. is hard for me to understand. unzipping and putting files into folders and
then having to rename them and move them around is above my ability. Spark fun products are good I have
used your products in the past and will continue to buy from Spark Fun. It would be nice for people like me, if
you offer software, to make it auto install and no errors!!! and also a good schematic would be nice. Keep up
the good work.
Works Great!

I had this up and working very quickly. I only gave it 4 stars because: There is discrepancy on the interwebs on
whether it requires 5v or 3.3. Since I used this with an electric imp I had to pull in a 5v power source.
Documentation seemed lacking on the pinouts to connect this to the LCD. I’m curious if you can send special
characters to the LCD through this board. I didn’t see anything in the documentation on that either… All in all,
provides basic control of an LCD with 1 wire.
