BASICSTRUCTURESANDMATERIALS
The Basic Structure Of The LED Chip Is Shown In Figure 1.
The LED chip has two electrodes; one is on the surface of the p” layer and the other on the bottom of the n” layer.
The Basic Structure Of The LED Lamp Is Shown In Figure 2.
The n ” electrode of the LED chip is connected to one side of the lead-frame by means of conductive epoxy. The p
electrode is connected to the other side of the lead-frame via a 1 mm gold wire attached with conductive epoxy as well.
When a forward voltage is applied to the external leads, a current flows through the p - n junction and light is emitted from
the surface of the LED chip.
Popular Semiconductor Materials For LED Chips Include Gap, GaAsP And
GaAlAs.
GaP (Gallium Phosphide) emits red, green and pure green light. Due to their high luminous intensity and efficiency,
these LED chips provide sufficient brightness for most practical uses. GaAsP (Gallium Arsenide Phosphide) emits
red, yellow, amber, and orange light. The yellow light is more sensitive to human eyes so it is difficult to maintain yellow
LEDs within the same brightness and wavelength characteristics. GaAlAs (Gallium Aluminum Arsenide) emits red
light. There are two kinds of chip structure for these devices - single heterojunction for super bright LEDs and double
heterojunction for ultra bright LEDs.
General Operating Characteristics Of LEDs Include Current, Voltage And
Luminous Intensity.
LEDs are current sensitive devices whereby the applied Current must be limited through the use of resistors. The
applied Voltage depends on the chip material and will vary accordingly. Application of reverse voltage must be avoided.
In general, the maximum reverse current an LED can withstand is 100µA @ 5V. Luminous intensity varies according
to the applied voltage and current and is limited by reaching a saturation point. Application of additional current beyond
this point will damage or destroy the device. Particular care should be taken to ensure that the LED is operating under
the proper current rating.
Benefits Of Using LEDs For Lighting Applications Include . . .
A very long operating life; very fast “on ” response time; low current operation; low cost and ease of use; high shock and
vibration resistance; and wide operating and storage temperature range.

LEAD FORMING
(a) Leads should be formed prior to the soldering process.
(b) Do not form the leads using the epoxy lamp housing
as a fulcrum.
INSTALLATION
(a) Do not apply physical stress to the leads
when mounting the LEDs on printed circuit boards.
(b) The holder should be designed so as not to
subject the leads to any undue lateral stress.
SOLDERING / CLEANING
Notes: Do not dip epoxy body into the solder bath.
Do not apply lateral stress to leads while they are heated.
Dipping or steam cleaning time should be one minute or less at normal cleaning temperature.
Cleaning with water should be avoided as rusting of the leads is possible.
LEDs may be damaged in an ultrasonic cleaning process. A sample led should be cleaned prior to mas s
cleaning to assure integrity.
