Post solder Cleaning and Drying
Considerations
Post solder cl eaning is usually the final circuit-board
assembly process prior to electrical board testing. The
result of inadequate cleaning and drying c an affect
both the relia bi lity of a power module and the
testability of the finish ed circuit-board assembly. For
guidance on appr opriate soldering, cleaning and

Through-Hole Lead-Free Soldering
Information
The RoHS-co m pl iant through-hole product s use the
SAC (Sn/Ag/Cu) Pb-free solder and RoHS-compliant
components. They are designed to be process ed
through single or dual wave sol dering machi nes. The
pins have an R oH S-compliant finish that is compatible
with both Pb a nd Pb-free wave s ol dering proc es ses.
A maximum preheat rate of 3°C/s is suggested. The
wave preheat pr ocess should be such that the
temperature of the power mod ule board is ke pt below
210°C. For Pb solder, the recommen ded pot
temperature is 260°C, while the Pb-free solder pot is
270°C max. Not all RoHS-co m pl iant through-hole
products can be processed with paste-through-hole
Pb or Pb-free reflow process. If addit ional information
is needed, please consult with your Linea ge Power
representative for more details.
Surface Mount Informati on
Pick and Place
The FLT007A0-SRZ SMT modules use an open
frame construction and are d esigned for a f ully
automated assembly process . The modules are fitted
with a label designed to prov ide a large surface area
for pick and place operations . The label meets all the
requirements for surface mount processing, as well as
safety standards, and is able to withstand reflow
temperatures of up to 300oC. The label also carries
product information such as product code, serial
number and lo c ation of manufacture.
Nozzle Recommendati on s
The module weight has been kept to a minimum by
using open frame construct ion. Even so, t hese
modules have a relativel y large mass whe n c ompared
to conventional SMT components. Variables such as
nozzle size, tip style, vacuum pressure and pick &
placement sp eed should be considered t o optimize
this process. The minimum recom mended nozzle
diameter for reliable operation is 5mm. The maximum
nozzle outer d iameter, which will safely fit within the
allowable component spaci ng, is 8 mm max.
Tin Lead Soldering
The FLT007A0-SRZ power modu les are lead free
modules and can be soldered ei ther in a lead-free
solder process or in a conventional Tin/Lead (Sn/Pb)
process. It i s recommended that the customer review
data sheets in order to customize the solder reflow
profile for eac h applicatio n board assembly. The
following ins tructions mus t be observed when
soldering these units. Fail ur e to observe these
instructio ns may result in t he failure of or cause
damage to the modules, and can adv er sel y aff ect
long-term relia bility.
In a conventional Tin/Lead (Sn/Pb) solder process
peak reflow temperatures are limited to les s than
235oC. Typical ly, the eutectic solder melts at 183oC,
wets the land, and subsequent ly wicks the dev i c e
connection. Sufficient time must be allowed to f us e
the plating on the connection to ensure a reli able
solder joint . There are sever al types of SMT r eflow
technologies currently used in the industry. These
surface mount power modules can be reliably
soldered using natural for c ed convection, IR (radiant
infrared), or a combination of convection/IR. For
reliable soldering the sol der reflo w prof i le should be
established by accurate ly measuring the modules CP
connector tem peratures.
