Renesas Technology Releases High-Performance SuperH™ Family SH7764 for
High-End Digital Audio Applications such as HDD Audio and Network Audio
SH-4A CPU core, 324 MHz (583 MIPS) operation, and comprehensive on-chip
peripheral functions including 2D graphics and ATAPI, enabling implementation of
high-performance systems at low cost
Tokyo, February 19 , 2007 Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the SH7764 microprocessor
with a maximum operating frequency up to 324 MHz, incorporating the SuperH™*1 Family’s top-end
SH-4A CPU core and comprehensive peripheral functions, for use in HDD audio, network audio, and
similar high-end digital audio devices, and multimedia devices such as car navigation models. Sample
shipments will begin in Japan in April 2007.
The SH7764 offers the following features.
(1) 324 MHz SH-4A CPU core enabling implementation of high-performance multimedia systems
The SH7764 incorporates an SH-4A CPU core with a maximum operating frequency of 324 MHz,
enabling high-speed audio codec and image data processing. Large-capacity cache memory
comprising 32 Kbytes each for instructions and data, as well as 16-Kbyte RAM, helps to speed up
software processing. An on-chip floating-point processing unit (FPU) operating at a maximum
speed of 324 MHz supports single- and doubleprecision operations, and achieves maximum
computational performance of 2.3 GFLOPS (giga floating-point operations per second) at single
precision. The FPU also provides hardware support of sine/cosine operations and vector
arithmetic operations, helping to speed up 3D graphics drawing processing. This CPU core
enables a high-performance multimedia system to be implemented. For example, using the FPU
for MP3 or similar encoding (compression) of CD or suchlike music data by audio codec software
reduces the CPU load, and enables multiple applications to be run simultaneously.
(2) On-chip peripheral functions necessary for digital audio applications and the like, enabling system
cost to be reduced
High-end digital audio devices require the following functions.
A storage function for music data and image data
A communication function used for music distribution, interfacing to a CD-DB*2, PC, etc.
A display function that implements a GUI*3
The SH7764 on-chip peripheral functions supporting large-capacity storage include an ATAPI
controller allowing connection to an HDD/CD drive, a NAND flash interface, and a memory card
controller. A variety of interfaces, including an Ethernet controller and a USB interface are also
incorporated, supporting various communication functions, while on-chip display functions
include a 2D graphics engine and an LCD controller and digital RGB output function for display
purposes. This comprehensive set of on-chip peripheral functions enables the main features of a
system to be implemented with a single chip, helping to reduce overall system cost.

(3) On-chip memory bus allowing SDRAM connection, enabling construction of a high-speed, high-
quality display system
The SH7764 includes a 108 MHz 32/64-bit bus connectable to high-speed SDRAM. This allows
program execution, high-speed image drawing using 2D graphics, and display functions employing
the LCD controller and digital RGB output function to be used effectively.
< Development Background >
The digital audio field that includes HDD audio and network audio systems, and the multimedia field
covering such applications as car navigation systems, are witnessing a rapid increase in the popularity
of devices handling MP3, AAC*4, and suchlike compressed audio data. At the same time, broadband
networks, of which ADSL and FTTH (Fiber To The Home) are typical examples, are becoming
increasingly widespread, and music and image distribution services are now readily available in the
home.
With continued growth expected in the field of such devices that connect to networks and handle
compressed audio data, there is a demand for higher system performance together with smaller size and
lower cost.
Renesas Technology has previously released products incorporating an SH-4 or SH-4A CPU core for
use in high-performance multimedia devices, and holds a major market share in such fields as car
navigation. Now, taking account of the prospects for continued growth in the network connection field,
Renesas Technology has developed the high-performance SH7764 microprocessor incorporating a
powerful SH-4A CPU core and a range of peripheral functions including a 2D graphics engine,
Ethernet controller, USB, and ATAPI controller, to enable systems incorporating network connection
and data compression functions to be implemented at low cost.
< Product Details >
The SH7764 incorporates a high-performance SH-4A CPU core operating at a maximum frequency of
324 MHz, together with a comprehensive set of peripheral functions that provide large-capacity storage
and various kinds of communication and display capability, making it possible to greatly reduce system
costs in the rapidly growing fields of HDD audio and network audio devices, and in-vehicle
information terminals such as car navigation systems.
On-chip cache memory comprising 32-kbyte 4-way set associative instruction cache and 32-kbyte 4-
way set associative data cache helps to speed up software processing. In addition, the SH7764 includes
16 kbytes of RAM allowing high-speed access during instruction data accesses. System performance
can be improved by storing exception handling programs, and audio and image processing programs
requiring real-time capability, in this RAM.
On-chip peripherals for implementing storage functions include an ATAPI controller, NAND flash
controller, and memory card controller, while support for communication functions is provided by an
Ethernet controller, USB interface, and so forth. On-chip display functions comprise a 2D graphics
engine for screen drawing and an LCD controller and digital RGB output function for display purposes.
The provision of such peripheral functions enables the principal functions of a system to be
implemented with a single chip, greatly helping to reduce system cost. The comprehensive set of on-
chip peripheral functions also includes an SSI (serial sound interface) for digital audio playback, a
serial communication interface with a FIFO (First In First Out) facility (SCIF), an I2C bus interface
allowing interfacing to E2PROM and the like, a 32-bit timer, a watchdog timer, and a DMA controller,
facilitating interfacing to peripheral devices.
The package used is a 404-pin BGA (19 mm × 19 mm) with a 0.8 mm ball pitch, allowing low-cost
mounting. This is an environment-friendly lead-free package.

The SH7764 incorporates on-chip debugging functions that allow real-time debugging at the maximum
operating frequency. The E10A-USB on-chip debugging emulator is available as a development
environment, and SH7764 system development can be carried out efficiently using the HUDI and AUD
functions.
With future plans for increased CPU speed, dual-core implementation, and enhanced peripheral
function integration including high-speed memory interface support, Renesas Technology will continue
to release products tailored to market needs in a timely fashion.
